malykh.com relocation

I changed the server for the malykh.com site. It was a requirement of the hosting provider. I hope I did not break anything.

Cannondale Cujo 1: 29x2.1 wheels mounted

When I chose the Cannondale Cujo 1, I decided to mount 29" wheels in case the 27.5+ tires were disappointing. All in all, 27.5+ tires are not that bad, they were great on sand for example. But I realized that I liked the 2.1" tires (which were on my old GT Avalanche) better. And with the failure of the rear rim, it was only a matter of time.

Components for the new 29x2.1 wheels:

I put them on the Cujo 1 pretty easily. Of course I had to move a cassette to the new rear wheel and then adjust the brake calipers and the rear derailleur.

I also replaced the wheel reflectors because they were too short for the new rims (the distance between the spokes is bigger now).

It looks like the new 29x2.1 wheels have a slightly larger outside diameter than the 27x2.8 and even the 27x3.0 wheels.

Weight changes (complete wheels):

Old front 27.5x3.0 (with "SuperLite" tube): 2410g
New front 29x2.1: 2050g (-360g)

Old rear 27.5x2.8 (with OEM tube): 3315g
New front 29x2.1: 2735g (-580g)

The first thing I noticed was how loud and noisy the freehub is! The OEM Cujo 1 is almost silent. But I think a loud freewheel is good for safety (for pedestrians and other riders).

Olympus E-PL1: 14-42/3.5-5.6 lens

The so-called "M.Zuiko Digital" 14-42/3.5-5.6 is a surprisingly good lens for a budget zoom.

But it is slow, even if you do not consider the aperture equivalent (f/7-f11). It gives the strong feeling of a small sensor compact digital camera. Even though the Micro 4/3 sensor is quite large compared to a 1" sensor (of modern mobile phones and compact cameras). 2x vs 2.7x crop factor.

I would like to see something faster. But the shortest shutter speed of the E-PL1 is only 1/2000! So frustrating, this is the level of a film camera. Especially when the base (native) ISO of the E-PL1 is ISO 200. Even at f/3.5, there are problems with highlights when shooting outdoors.

Overall, the Olympus E-PL1 is more useful to me as a digital camera than the Pentax K-m. This is because I like mirrorless cameras more than DLSRs.

Listvyanka, Abandoned building (February 2005)

Lake Baikal, Listvyanka (a work settlement), an abandoned building, February 2005.

Then the building became a hotel in the 2010s, but as far as I know it is abandoned (for sale?) again today.

Koozer XM1850 (622x27) wheelset

And this is the third step to 29x2.1 wheels for my Cannondale Cujo 1 (after tubes and tires).

Koozer XM1850 (622x27) wheelset, ready to mount.

Front hub (XM460): 15x110 Boost
Rear hub (XM460): 141 QR Boost (with caps and axle included)
Cassette splines: [Shimano] HG
Brake rotor mount: 6-bolt
Spokes: 32 per wheel

Strange rear hub design: the freehub body (with splines for a cassette) is mounted on the hub without any fasteners, so it can easily be removed by hand.

And not so easy to reinstall (I did it with a thin wire). Be careful when removing the rear wheel from a bike.

Shimano RD-M8000-GS adjustment screws

The adjustment screws/bolts of the Shimano RD-M8000-GS (11-speed Deore XT) rear derailleur:

H (High speed) - smallest cog/sprocket side limiter
L (Low speed) - largest cog/sprocket side limiter
B (B-tension) - so-called "end" screw/bolt

The hex size is 2mm.

Be careful not to confuse the B screw/bolt with the H screw/bolt. This rear derailleur has an unusual placement of them.

Staeble-Kata E 45/2.8 (M39x1/44): Standard triplet for Braun Super Paxette II

Yet another triplet lens and yet another lens for a Braun [Super] Paxette II, with the M39x1/44 mount: the Staeble-Kate E 1:2,8/45.

Most likely the lens has 3 elements in 3 groups. Something like a Cooke triplet:

This lens was a standard lens for Braun Super Paxette II cameras. The letter -E- in the name (as in the Staeble-Telexon E 85/5.6) indicates support for coupled rangefinder present on Super Paxette II cameras, not just Paxette II. There was also an earlier R version (without rangefinder coupling) of the Kata 45/2.8.

The lens is fast (f/2.8) for a triplet.

The aperture has 10 blades:

The aperture ring has click stops at f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16.

The minimum focusing distance is about 1m.

The front part of the lens (with the filter thread) rotates during focusing and aperture changing.

I like triplet lenses, and the Kata is my fourth triplet lens (and second for a Braun [Super] Paxette II after the Staeble-Werk Choro R 35/4.5).

Kenda Small Block Eight 29x2.1 tires

This is the second step to 29x2.1 wheels for my Cannondale Cujo 1 (after inner tubes).

Kenda Small Block Eight 29x2.1 (54-622) K1047 tires, folding bead. A specialty of this product for the Chinese market is 60 TPI (instead of 120 TPI).

I know this model (in 26x2.1 size). And I liked it overall. When I started thinking about 29" wheels, this was one of the tire candidates.

It is claimed that the weight range is 568-628g. But my tires weigh 641g and 651g. Both without packaging.

Samyang AF 35/2.8 FE: Samples [1] - FF - f/2.8

Photos taken with the Sony a7c (FF, 24MP) and the Samyang 35/2.8 FE at f/2.8. The profiled lens (distortion/vignetting) correction is disabled.

It is the only Sony FE autofocus lens I own now. I am used to focusing manually. The main advantage of the Samyang is that it is electronically linked to the camera, so the lens model and aperture are automatically in EXIF.
