The so-called "M.Zuiko Digital" 14-42/3.5-5.6 is a surprisingly good lens for a budget zoom.
But it is slow, even if you do not consider the aperture equivalent (f/7-f11). It gives the strong feeling of a small sensor compact digital camera. Even though the Micro 4/3 sensor is quite large compared to a 1" sensor (of modern mobile phones and compact cameras). 2x vs 2.7x crop factor.
I would like to see something faster. But the shortest shutter speed of the E-PL1 is only 1/2000! So frustrating, this is the level of a film camera. Especially when the base (native) ISO of the E-PL1 is ISO 200. Even at f/3.5, there are problems with highlights when shooting outdoors.
Overall, the Olympus E-PL1 is more useful to me as a digital camera than the Pentax K-m. This is because I like mirrorless cameras more than DLSRs.
