Staeble-Werk Choro R 35/4.5: Lens restoration

I have the Staeble-Werk Choro R 35/4.5 lens. Surprisingly, I received it adapted to the M39x1/28.8 mount. This gave me a very useful M39x1-M39x1 adapter with a length of 15.2mm (44-28.8mm). But the lens itself had the protruding ring on the back.

It looks like a cam for a coupled rangefinder, but it is not: for the correct rate, this ring should be a curved cam for the direct mount to the 35mm lens optical unit. So I decided to remove this ring to restore the lens to its original condition.

There are some threaded holes in the ring, but no screws. The ring is press fitted onto the optical unit.

First I tried to heat the ring a bit, but it was still impossible to remove it.

To avoid damaging the lens, I carefully cut a notch into the ring with a die grinder. Then I popped a chisel into the notch to loosen the fit and removed the ring by hand.

After that, I disassembled, cleaned, and lubricated the lens.

It is now possible to mount the lens on a Braun Paxette II (M39x1/44) camera. And of course it can still be used with the M39x1/28.8 adapter.
